Tell Me More: Semi-Auto Vs. Fully Automatic Guns

If you’ve been following the developments in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, then by now, you’re aware of every detail of the incident. Thanks to the medias obsessive over reporting, we know what the killer, Adam Lanza, wore that day, what type of video games he liked to play, and the type of weapons he used: 3 guns, including a .223 caliber Bushmaster AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

As tired as even we’re beginning to get of hearing about this tragedy, we couldn’t help wondering, when it comes to guns like the ones used in Newtown, what’s the difference between a semi-automatic and a fully automatic gun?

So we did some searching for the answer and came up with this 2009 video from the Sportsman’s Channel that explains it. Check it out:

Camden NJ’s Own Gun Buyback Nabs 1,137 Weapons

Wow, look at all them guns! We already told you that in the wake of the messed up mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where a deranged young man gunned down 20 elementary school children, a gun buyback program, held in Brooklyn, netted a record amount of weapons. But, apparently they have nothing on Camden, New Jersey.
A Jersey gun buyback event, held at two Camden churches, brought in an astounding 1,137 guns, including “rifles, shotguns and pistols, sawed-off shotguns, a century-old antique weapon, a rifle used for hunting elephants and five fully automatic weapons,” According to reports. (Wait, a rifle for hunting elephants!?!).

Officials presume, much like the gun buyback held in Brooklyn, gun owners were motivated to turn in their stash by what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary. The $250 dollars they were given in exchange couldn’t have hurt either.

NJ state Attorney General, Jeffrey Chiesa told the Post, “”At 2 o’clock we were out of money.”

Congrats, Camden. That means less weapons on the street to hurt people with.

News Brief Update: CT Massacre- Mother of Killer Was an Advocate for Guns

The New York Times reported that Nancy Lanza “Loved Guns”. Nancy Lanza, 52 often times took her son, Adam Lanza, to the gun range in New York to practice target shooting. Friends of Nancy confirm that she did own several guns, they were all legal, 5 to be exact.

The motive for the shooting spree is still unknown, but school officials and other sources  did confirm that Nancy Lanza was not an official employee of Sandy-Hook Elementary School. It is not clear why Adam Lanza chose this school as a target.

Even though this is still a sensitive time, we’re going to say it anyway… Live by the Gun Die by the Gun. RIP Nancy Lanza.

UPDATE: 27 Dead in CT School Shooting, Including 18 kids

[Update Below] A deadly shooting in Newton, Conn. has left 18 children dead today, after a gunman entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School, located about 65 miles northeast of New York City, and started blasting. According to the New York Times, officials are say the adult gunman is dead. Other reports claim he maybe a parent of one of the children who attended the school.
A student who attends the 700 student school told NBC News what he experienced in the melee. He says, “I was in the gym and I heard like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner and we huddled. We all heard these booming noises, and we started crying. So the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us. Then a police officer told us to run outside”.
This makes the second mass shooting to hit the country this week. On Tuesday, an Oregon man dressed from head to toe on camouflage entered a mall and shot two people dead. The man was later identified as 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts of Portland.
This new rampage is being called the second worse school shooting in US history. White House press secretary, Jay Carney, says president Obama is being briefed on the situation.

UPDATE: The shooter has been identified as Ryan Lanza, a male in his 20s.

UPDATE: Lanza was apparently clad in all black as he entered the school this morning, reportedly  carrying an a .223-caliber rifle, and a handgun. The are also reports that a second man is currently in custody but it isn’t yet clear if he took part in the shooting. Meanwhile the death toll keeps rising, as the CTPost reports the number of dead to be around 29, with 22 of them being children.

UPDATE: The 24-year-old gunman apparently shot his mother, drove to the school where she worked shot her class and the principal. Lanza is from NJ and a body was found in his home.

UPDATE: We’ve found the Facebook page of the alleged shooter, Ryan Lanza. It’s an erie photo considering he’s dressed in all black.

UPDATE: It actually turns out that the above picture is not the real ‘Ryan Lanza’. Here’s the deal; it looks like the actual shooter may be Ryan Lanza’s brother, Adam Lanza. Many sites, including us, may have been too quick with the picture. Although, we’ve decided not to take it down, as this story is still developing.

UPDATE: Now that the facts are coming more into focus, ABC News and others have confirmed the killer is 20-year-old Adam Lanza and not his Brother, Ryan Lanza. Many media outlets and blogs (including us), erroneously reported the false fact due possibly due to a police officials mistake. In the age of internet fast news, we’re sure there’ll plenty written about the mistakes made in reporting this story. Also, reports that Lanza’s mother was a teacher at the school are still not clear. She may have been just a volunteer and Sandy Hook Elementary. So far police have questioned Ryan Lanza and say he’s being cooperative.

Buzzfeed has some harrowing pictures depicting the tragedy. We’ve posted some here. You can check out the rest here.

Real Sons Of Anarchy: Bike Gang Busted Selling Guns At Day Care

In a case of life imitating art, three different bike gangs, working together in Queens were busted by federal authorities for trafficking an arsenal of guns and drugs through their club house. According to the New York Post, one member of the “Forbidden Ones” bike gang, Scott “Spider” Brannigan, 61, even used the Beach Bag Babies, an all babies bike gang his wife’s Queens day care center to sell high-powered rifles and ammunition.

These real life “Sons of Anarchy” – an FX drama which follows the often illegal dealings of a fictional motorcycle gang in Arizona – go by equally theatrical real life monikers like the “Dirty Ones” and the “Trouble Makers” (Cause nobody would respect a bike gang called “the Dandelions”).  Their antics rival that of their television counter parts. Last year, the Forbidden Ones got into a brawl outside of a tattoo shop, where they attacked responding cops with knives and brass knuckles.

Also, did we mention drugs? Any self-respecting bike gang selling guns has to have drugs, too (and let’s be honest, the phrase “guns and drugs” go together like Nutella and Jelly). Along with more than 20 guns during the raid of the gang members’ homes and club houses yesterday, authorities say they found, cocaine, heroin and weed.

3-D Printable Gun Designer Gets Shut Down

In case you haven’t been paying attention, there’s been major advancement in the production of 3-D printer- machines that let you download a design and make a three dimensional functioning model at home.

Cody Wilson, who’s part of a group of Texas-based techies called “Defense Distributed,” came up with the idea to use one of these 3-D printers to produce a working version of an AR-15 assault rifle (they’re calling it. “wiki weapon”).

Wilson ran into a little problem, when the company that loaned him the printer, Stratasys Inc., got wind of his plan to make the design of the gun public and available over the internet. They demanded he return it. In the promotional video below, Wilson says, “It’s about living in a world where you can just download the file for the thing you want to make in this life.”

The company claims what Wilson wants to use their product, the uPrint SE, for “illegal purposes” which, you know, they don’t want to be involved in.

In the meantime, Wilson plans to apply for a gun manufacture’s license – although he believes he doesn’t need one – look for a new printer, and keep on trying.
